The Santa Clara men's water polo team took on UC Davis for their final conference game and home game of the year, but could not come away with the win. The 11-4 loss was the third time the Broncos have fallen to conference leader Davis this year.
After trailing 7-5 in the first half, the Broncos clamed down in the second half, but their offense sputtered, letting the game slip away in the third quarter. "We played well in the first half, moved like we were supposed to, but didn't play well defensively," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "Then we did a better job in our half court defense in the second half, but offensively we didn't move enough to create opportunities."
Josh Early led the Bronco scorers with two goals, contributing an assist and a steal. Matt Adler, Charlie Moore, Nicholas Poggetti, and Tommy Hendrickson all scored one goal apiece.
Adler chipped in two steals and two kickouts drawn along with his goal, but probably his biggest contribution came in his attitude. "I really liked the way Matt played this game," said Wilbur. "He played fired up and really set a good example for our team."
Farrell had two assists, a steal, and two kickouts drawn to go along with his goal. Luke Oda drew two kickouts along with a steal.
Chris Jones, subbing in for the injured Robert Callahan, blocked nine shots and had an assist as well. "Chris played a really good game," said Wilbur.
"There were good parts, bad parts," said Wilbur. "We just have to figure out how to put it all together if we want to beat Davis because they're a very good team."
The Broncos finish off their regular season next weekend at Stanford on Sunday, November 11.
