Santa Cruz, Calif. -- The Santa Clara men's water polo team lost 17-5 against #3 UCLA Sunday morning, before taking out their frustrations on Fresno Pacific 21-4 in the afternoon. Liam Farrell led all goal scorers with four total for the day. The Broncos are now 9-8 on the season.

In the first game of the day against UCLA, the Broncos hung tight, keeping the score at 8-4 going into the second half before the Bruins cracked down and eventually ran away with the game.

"I think we played a decent game, at least in the first half," said head coach Keith Wilbur. This was the second loss to UCLA this season for Santa Clara.

Liam Farrell, Mark Soares, Nicholas Poggetti, Mitchell Klipa, and Tommy Hendrickson all scored one goal in the game against UCLA. Klipa added four steals to his goal and Luke Oda chipped in with three kickouts drawn.

Robert Callahan blocked four shots and split time in the cage with Chris Jones who recorded four blocks as well.

The second game of the day was a completely different story as the Broncos took immediate control against Fresno Pacific. "We jumped on them early and that was pretty much it," said Wilbur.

The Broncos spread the wealth that game, in which 13 different players scored goals. Farrell led the way with a hat trick. Jeff Welch, Anderson Clendeninn, Jake Diserio, Charlie Moore, Mark Hornberger, and Tommy Kelly all scored two goals apiece. Then Josh Early, Joshua Luebke, Mike Detoy, Matthew Martin, Stephen Hobbs, and Soares all had one goal.

Oda continued to contribute in the other statistical columns, adding three assists, while Klipa had two assists to go with two steals.

Callahan blocked eight shots in the first half and Chris Jones blocked seven while playing the second half.

The Broncos jump back into the pool next weekend, October 5th, with the Convergence Classic, where they'll kick off the event with a game against conference foe Whittier.
