No. 12 Broncos Split Results in Home Opener

Oct. 25, 2008

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The No. 12 Santa Clara men's water fell in their second game of the home opening double header to California Baptist, 9-7. In what was a back-and-forth possession game, the Lancers were able to get the offensive advantage at the end of the game, to stun the talented Bronco team.

Jack Wall had another standout game, as the redshirt junior scored five of the Broncos seven goals, including converting a 5-meter penalty. Mitchell Klipa worked to keep Baptist out of goal range throughout the game, as he had a strong game at the 2-meter defender position. Klipa and the Bronco defense kept the Lancers off balance in their scoring efforts, as many of their shots got sailed above the goal or were easily blocked by Wishart in the first two quarters.

In the second half, both teams came out more aggressive. SCU, who had a goal advantage entering the third quarter could never regain the lead after the Lancers scored the go-ahead-goal to make the score 5-4. Stephen Hobbs scored a critical goal to bring Santa Clara back into their offensive game and Wall then converted SCU's next shot to bring the Broncos to within one goal of the Lancers, as the score improved to 7-6. With less than three minutes to go in the game, Wall then scored the tying goal to bring the game to seven all. One minute later Baptist scored back-to-back goals and kept a frustrated Bronco team off the board for the remainder of the game.

Santa Clara looks to bounce back from their first home loss, as they travel to No. 3 California tomorrow. Game time is set for noon.
