BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 12 Santa Clara men's water polo team fell 17-6 to No. 3 California this afternoon at Berkeley. After splitting results yesterday in the season home opener, the Broncos were not able to outmatch the Golden Bears. Redshirt junior Jack Wall had another standout game for SCU, as he scored five of the Broncos' six goals. Wall also worked to protect the Broncos' goal, as he had a steal in the game as well.
"Jack had a great game," head coach Keith Wilbur said. "He was left open on several of our five-on-six opportunities and was able to convert shots."
Seven different Broncos' drew kick outs in the game, including Mike Sorgenfrei and Stephen Hobbs who each drew two each. Sorgenfrei also tallied two assists and Hobbs had two steals. Junior Liam Farrell assisted on one of Wall's goals and also scored a goal in the game, and Daley Meistrell had an assist and a kick out drawn.
"Going into this weekend's play, we really need to reevaluate and figure out what to do," Wilbur said about the team's game plan. "We need to get back to the basics, with a strong defense and make sure everyone is working together to create scoring opportunities."
The Broncos will continue to be tested as they host perennial powerhouses Loyola Marymount on Friday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m., and Stanford on Saturday, Nov. 1 at noon.
