No. 14 Men's Water Polo Falls to No. 2 Stanford

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The No. 14 Santa Clara men's water polo team fell 19-7 to local rival, No. 2 Stanford, Sunday afternoon at the Sullivan Aquatic Center. The Broncos fall to 14-10 on the season, while the Cardinal improved to 20-2. SCU was led by junior Liam Farrell, who scored three goals on the day, including twice in the fourth quarter, and drew two kick outs.

"Obviously Stanford is a very good team, but we couldn't stop them defensively," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "Offensively I felt good about our effort. We attacked aggressively and created opportunities, but we are having a hard time deciding when to press and when to help.

The Cardinal went up early, jumping out to a 4-0 lead before Santa Clara's Mike Sorgenfrei put one in the back of the net at 2:47. Stanford led after the first quarter 6-2 and pushed its lead to 10-3 after the second period. Stanford featured a balanced attack, with Chris Jacobson collecting three goals and five other players tossing two goals a piece.

Mike Detoy scored for the Broncos with 1:18 left in the third quarter to make it 16-4 Stanford. The two teams matched each other with three goals each in the fourth quarter to make the final score 19-7 Stanford.

Santa Clara will host UC San Diego Saturday, Nov. 8, at 1 p.m., before hosting its Alumni Game on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at the new Sullivan Aquatic Center.
