No. 15 Broncos to Play for Third Place, Fall to No. 8 LMU

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The No. 15 Santa Clara men's water polo team fell in the second round at the WWPA Championship to No. 8 Loyola Marymount, 12-8. Leading SCU was junior Mike Sorgenfrei who had a goal, an assist, a kick out and a steal.

At the end of the first quarter, the game was tied at three-all; however in the following three periods LMU went on a 9-5 run to earn the win to move onto the championship.

"It was a hard fought close game," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "We were not able to capitalize on our five-on-six situations, when we drew kick outs, and were not able to get the offensive advantage."

Freshman goalie Michael Wishart had another standout game for SCU, posting 14 blocks and one steal. All-WWPA honorable mention honoree Liam Farrell tallied a goal and two kicks outs, while Nicholas Poggetti and Jack Wall each had a pair of goals. Poggetti also posted a kick out and a steal, and Wall had three kick outs and an assist. Matt Adler had a consistent performance with two assists and a goal at driver and Mike Detoy collected three kick outs. Josh Early scored a goal and drew a kick out and Mitchell Klipa notched two steals and a kick out. James Case, Andrew Fitch and Chris Parolin each had an assist, and Stephen Hobbs drew a kick out.

Santa Clara will conclude the 2008 season tomorrow, Sunday, Nov. 23, at 2:15 p.m. when they take on No. 11 UC Davis in the third place game.
