STOCKTON, Calif. - The No. 15 Santa Clara men's water polo team concluded play at the NorCal Tournament hosted at the University of the Pacific. The Broncos fell in game one, 14-6, to UC Santa Barbara and to the University of the Pacific, 7-5, in double overtime in game two.
In the first game of the day, the Broncos led the game in the first half, 4-2, but could not stop the Gauchos 7-0 run in the third quarter. In the fourth quarter SCU scored two goals, but could not rally back as UCSB scored five goals. Six different Broncos scored in the game, including Jake Diserio who scored his first goal of the season, as well as posting a pair steals and two kick outs drawn.
In the second game of the day, Santa Clara took UOP to a second overtime before falling, 7-5. After being down 3-2 in the third quarter, the Broncos fought back to even out the score in the fourth, 5-5, taking the game to overtime. In two overtime periods, Pacific scored two goals to take the 7-5 win.
Jack Wall scored two goals for SCU and notched an assist in the game. Mitchell Klipa had a Bronco high for the game of three steals.
The Broncos concluded the tournament with a 12th place finish, which was their best placing in seven years of participating in the NorCals.
"While we went 1-3 on the weekend, it was not indicative of our play," head coach Keith Wilbur said. "We played really well and we finished 12 out of 16 which was our highest finish yet."
Santa Clara returns to action this weekend when they travel to UC Santa Cruz to participate in the Slugfest Tournament.
