The No. 12 Santa Clara water polo team won each of its four
games this weekend at the Claremont Convergence. The Broncos
defeated hosts Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 9-6, and Pomona-Pitzer,
7-4. Santa Clara also defeated Whittier, 11-5, and
Occidental, 15-3.
Against CMS, senior Stephen
Hobbs and junior Brett
Zylstra each scored two goals. Also scoring was juniors
Daley
Meistrell, Marcus
Akerland, and James Case,
and seniors Mitch Klipa
and Nick
Poggetti. Meistrell added four steals and hobbs drew
three exclusions. Junior goalie Michael
Wishart had nine saves and an assist.
In the Whittier game, Hobbs and Case each scored three
goals. Also scoring was Zylstra, Meistrell (2), sophomore Patrick
Weiss, and freshman David
Guibord. Klipa had three steals.
Case had an outstanding game against tournament co-hosts
Pomona-Pitzer, scoring three goals on the Sagehens. Akerland,
Klipa, Weiss, and Poggetti all had one goal in support.
Wishart was outstanding in the cage, recording 14 saves and
an assist. Hobbs drew three kickouts and Meistrell drew
two. Zylstra had two assists, two steals, and three field
blocks.
The Broncos finished strong with an offensive outpouring against
the Tigers. Poggetti, Case, and Zylstra all scored
twice. Meistrell, Akerland, senior Josh Luebke, freshmen Theo
Nasser, Kyle Nadel,
and Tucker
Carlson, senior John
Radvanyi, Weiss, and Guibord all scored once. Wishart
saved two shots, while sophomore goalie John Nash had
one save in the fourth quarter.
Santa Clara will host its first home game of the season next
weekend, playing UC San Diego on Saturday at 1 p.m.
