Men's Water Polo Defeats Iona in First Game of Princeton Invitational

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Santa Clara men's water polo team kicked off the weekend at the Princeton Invitational on a winning note by defeating Iona, 9-6, on Friday afternoon.

John Raineri scored three goals within the first two minutes of the opening quarter, leading to a game-high four tallies for the Broncos (1-1).

Reilley May tacked on a marker from two meters at the conclusion of the first period.

The Gaels (2-3) closed to within 5-4 late in the first half, but the Broncos responded in the third quarter.

DeMarco Orella scored his two goals in the opening two minutes of the second half, and Raineri added another score.

Scott Zurnacian tallied a final goal for the Broncos on a man down attack early in the final quarter.

NOTES

QUOTABLE
"Our team came out with good energy, played strong defense and pushed the counter for the whole game," said head coach Keith Wilbur. "We're a little hot and cold on offense, but our consistency on offense is something we are focusing on and working to improve every game. It's very early in season and building chemistry on offense is normal this time of year."
