Women's Tennis Falls to 14th-Ranked Cal, 5-2

BERKELEY, Calif. – Santa Clara women's tennis fell to 14th-ranked Cal, 5-2, on Saturday at the Hellman Tennis Complex.  
 
The Golden Bears (3-1) won all three doubles matches with the No. 1 team of Anna Bright and Julia Rosenqvist beating Maddie Pothoff and Katya Tabachnik, 6-3, to clinch the doubles point.  
 
In singles play, the Broncos (0-2) lost the first three matches with Cal's Maria Smith downing Katya Tabachnik, 6-0, 6-3 on court four to clinch the overall win.
 
The Broncos earned its two points, both on 10-point tiebreaks, first by Elvena Gevargiz playing the fifth position against Alexis Nelson, 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-6).  That was followed by Maddie Pothoff beating  Julia Rosenqvist, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (19-17) on court two to close out the day.  
 
The Broncos will play CSUN on Sunday, Feb. 4 in the dual match season home opener at 11 a.m.
