Women's Tennis Shut Out At BYU

PROVO, Utah – Santa Clara women's tennis concluded its two-match trip to Utah losing to conference foe BYU, 4-0, on Saturday.

Playing without Madison Clarke, who plays No. 1 singles and in the top doubles pairing, the Broncos (7-9, 2-3 WCC) had to adjust their lineup. Clarke was forced to retire from her singles match in Friday's 4-2 loss against Weber State.

Maddie Pothoff, who partners with Clarke at No. 1, teamed with freshman Nadine Del Carmen on court No. 2 and lost 6-2 to Polina Malykh and Kate Cusick.

The freshmen doubles team of Elvena Gevargiz and Katya Tabachnik, who are typically slotted in the No. 2 position played at No. 1, losing 6-2 to Anastasia Abramyan and Mayci Jones which clinched the doubles point for BYU.

BYU (11-6, 4-1 WCC) swept thru singles play getting wins at courts No. 2, 3 and 1.

Pothoff, who entered the week as the 102nd-ranked player nationally by ITA, was defeated by Jones on court No. 1.

The Broncos will play a rare midweek match at Pacific on Wednesday as a makeup match from March 24 which was postponed due to rain.
