Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament Results
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's water polo closed out the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament with three straight wins.
The Broncos (11-10) held on to beat Brown, 7-6, and then knocked off Princeton, 10-7, on Sunday, the final day of the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament.
Santa Clara and San Jose State served as hosts to the 13-team, 25-game event that kicked off on Friday.
No. 9-ranked Harvard (22-0) came into the tournament with an unblemished record and remained perfect, winning all four games. California Baptist was also undefeated in the tournament, though only played twice.
Santa Clara's lone loss came at the hands of the Crimson on Saturday morning, falling 19-17. The Broncos rebounded in the afternoon, rolling past Iona, 16-7.
There were 16 games played at Santa Clara's Sullivan Aquatic Center and nine at San Jose State's Student Recreation and Aquatic Center.
Santa Clara 7, Brown 6
Patrick Kirk scored twice, including the game-winner, and Shane Hughes added two goals to help the Broncos hold on for a 7-6 win over Brown.
Matt Simko had three goals and Riad Hallal was credited with 15 saves for the Bears who were held to just 22 shots by Santa Clara which had a pair of three goal leads.
Hughes scored 28 seconds into the third quarter to give the Broncos a 5-2 advantage.
The Bears (16-10) drew within one on Adam Fuller's exclusion goal less than 1 minute into the fourth.
But Santa Clara answered back.
Jack Rottman got free inside 5 meters for a goal on a feed from Hughes and moments later Kirk scored to build a 7-4 lead.
However, Brown took advantage of a pair of Santa Clara ejections.
Simko scored 12 seconds after Kirk and Hudson Rawlings struck for a marker with 1:48 left.
But the Broncos defense stiffened. Sean Tehaney posted one of his six saves and Adam Low had a steal on the Bears' final possession.
Tehaney also had four of the team's 13 steals.
Santa Clara 10, Princeton 7
Mac Carey tallied four goals and Shane Hughes added two, including the game-winner, to go along with three assists to lead the Broncos to a 10-7 win over Princeton.
Yurian Quinones posted three goals for the Tigers (12-12) who were held to just one goal on seven attempts with the extra attacker.
Jake Taylor scored twice and Ryan Werner had one goal and two assists for the Broncos who trailed for just 30 seconds in the matchup.
Santa Clara led by three goals twice in the first half before Princeton pulled with 7-6 on a goal from Wyatt Benson with 6:23 left in the fourth quarter. But 35 seconds later on the power play, Hughes scored on a feed from Dominick Kirk and just more than 1 minute later Carey tallied his third goal.
Chase Zamborelli had a career-high 16 saves, including four in the fourth quarter, for the Broncos.

ABOUT THE JULIAN FRASER MEMORIAL TOURNAMENT
The Santa Clara water polo community lost one its own in the spring of 2017 with the passing of men's player Julian Fraser. The two-year member of the program touched many around him in his short life. In recognition, the water polo program renamed the annual Rodeo Tournament as the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament, a three-day event which features teams from both sides of the country. Fraser was beloved by coaches, teammates and the Santa Clara University community. He had a true joy for the sport, he was a fierce competitor and enjoyed the camaraderie with his teammates. This annual tournament is a fitting way to honor and remember him.
