SEATTLE –
Robert Seby beat Sebastian Hawken in three sets to clinch the match for Santa Clara men's tennis, 4-3, over Washington at the Nordstrom Tennis Center on Sunday.
With the match tied at 3-3, it all came down to court six between the Bronco senior and Hawken. After dropping the first set, Seby came back to beat Hawken, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, to help Santa Clara (4-1) to a come from behind win over the Huskies.
Against the Huskies (2-3), Santa Clara dropped the doubles point for the first time in four matches.
Trailing 1-0, the Broncos got singles wins by Tapiador Barajas and Gu on courts one and two to go up, 2-1.
Both Tapiador Barajas and Gu won in straight sets. Tapiador Barajas beat Sommer, 6-3, 6-4 and Gu beat Davis, 7-6 (5), 6-1.
Washington took the next two points on courts five and three to go up, 3-2.
Iliopoulos evened the match at 3-all when he beat Lumsden in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, setting up the stage for Seby's heroics on court six.
Sunday's match clincher was Seby's second over the weekend. On Saturday, Santa Clara beat Liberty, 6-1, with Seby beating Steve Mundt in straight sets to claim the fourth point of the match.
