STANFORD, Calif. –
Maddie Pothoff defeated No. 22-ranked Michaela Gordon in three sets but Santa Clara women's tennis lost 6-1 to No. 4 Stanford on Thursday in a rescheduled nonconference match.
Santa Clara (3-6) pushed the defending national champions on courts one and two of singles play but fell to the deep Stanford lineup comprised of four doubles teams ranked in the top-36 and eight singles players ranked in the top-106 of the ITA Division I rankings.
Pothoff defeated the highest of the ranked singles player in Gordon, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (11-9).
On court two,
Elvena Gevargiz took Melissa Lord, the No. 41-ranked singles player, to two tiebreak sets before falling, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-4).
Stanford (7-1) won the first six points of the match with the match clincher on court four when No. 63 Emma Higuchi beat
Katya Tabachnik 6-3, 6-2.
The doubles point was clinched by Niluka Madurawe and Janice Shin, the only non-ranked team or player in the Cardinal lineup, over
Nadine Del Carmen and
Jamie Schroer 6-1 on court three.
The match was originally set to take place back on Feb. 15 but was postponed due to rain.
