Track & Field Continues Record-Setting Pace at Occidental Invitational

LOS ANGELES — Santa Clara track & field closed out its 2019 regular season by setting the eighth program record of the campaign on Saturday at the Occidental Invitational. Jack Davidson clocked a 1,500-meter 3:45.02 to beat his own program record. The junior captured third place in the field of 58 at Bill Henry Track.

Davidson set a new 1,500-meter program record in each of his last three races at that distance. He took more than two seconds off of his previous low time of 3:47.59 from the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 19. His 1,500-meter mark at Oxy clinched a spot in the NCAA West Regional Meet and he is on the bubble at 5,000 meters, while Zach Litoff will qualify in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

Emma McCurry posted the top individual finish for the women, taking 31st place in a field of 84 in the 5,000-meter run. William Hunsdale won his 3,000-meter steeplechase heat with a 9:27.61.

FROM THE COACHES

Head coach Felipe Montoro on the men: "That was a fitting end to an outstanding regular season. I was very pleased with the energy and enthusiasm that the team showed for competing. Obviously, Jack Davidson once again lowering his school record was awesome, but what stood out for me was the team's reaction to William Hunsdale putting together a big win in the steeplechase and Evan Misuraca closing out his career at 5,000 meters with another gutty effort. That team chemistry is what made the season very successful and fun. Our focus now shifts to Sacramento for Jack and Zach Litoff's postseason opportunities."

Associate head coach Pete Cushman on the women: "The women did a great job of managing various hiccups, including a delayed flight and two lightning delays which pushed the racing much later into the evening. They came through with what was objectively the best racing of the year. I'm so proud of the courage we showed in each race this season and am particularly proud of the huge improvements we have made in the last year."
