Men's Water Polo Wins Twice on Saturday at Aggie Roundup

DAVIS, Calif. – Santa Clara men's water polo used its offensive punch to win a pair of games on Saturday in the Aggie Roundup at UC Davis.

The Broncos (3-3) cruised past Ottawa University - Arizona, 22-11, and Austin College, 17-5, at Schaal Aquatic Center.

Santa Clara 22, Ottawa University – Arizona 11

Arvin Bahia scored a career-best seven times, Patrick Kirk matched a career high with four goals and Ryan Werner scored three to help the Broncos roll to a 22-11 win over Ottawa University – Arizona.

Santa Clara began to pull away with three straight goals in the third quarter. Kirk scored twice in less than a 1-minute span to build a 16-9 lead.

Sean Tehaney went the distance in net, posting 11 saves for the Broncos who were only 1-for-10 with the extra attacker, but they needed only 34 attempts to post their highest scoring output since in 18 years.

The Broncos posted the first four goals of the game and led 7-2 on Luca Pagano's goal with 3:17 left in the opening quarter.

Mac Carey registered a career-high seven assists.

Weston Restad had five goals for the Spirit (1-9).

Santa Clara 17, Austin College 5

Blake D'Souza, one of 11 players to hit the back of the net, scored a career-best three times to help lead the Broncos to a 17-5 win over Austin College.

Santa Clara recorded five of the first six goals of the game and then blew it open with seven more in the third quarter.

A goal by Robert Griffin with less than 3 minutes left in the opening half drew the Roos within 5-3, but the Broncos posted the next 11 goals.

Jake Taylor, who scored twice, capped the massive run with a strike less than 1 minute into the fourth period.

Patrick Kirk, Dominick Kirk and Ford Eldredge also had two goals for the Broncos were an efficient 4-for-8 with the man advantage and kept Austin scoreless in eight attempts.

Chase Zamborelli had 15 blocks in net for Santa Clara.

NOTES
• The 22 goals were the most by the Broncos since a 26-6 win over Cal Maritime Academy on Oct. 30, 2001.
• The Broncos had not reached as many as 17 goals since defeating Fresno Pacific 17-11 on Nov. 4, 2017.

UP NEXT
The Broncos close out play in the tournament on Sunday, facing Whittier College at 8 a.m. and Cal at 2:15 p.m.
