Track & Field Opens Season With Strong Performance

SPOKANE, Wash. – Santa Clara opened the Track & Field season at the Cougar Classic on Friday and Saturday, posting strong showings, including a pair of wins.

Zach Litoff took home the title in the men's 1-mile with a time of 4:08.88. Nicholas Russel came in second at 4:09.67, setting a personal best, and Ian Twyman was fourth at 4:11.56. Josh Simboli also ran and finished eighth in 4:16.48, setting a personal best.

The team of Simboli, DeVon Dupree, Henry Raymond, and Litoff took first in the men's distance medley at 10:08.98. In second was Santa Clara's team of Henry Raymond, Hayelom Fitsum, Dion Dupree, and Jorge Estrella with a time of 10:14.92.

In the men's 800, Henry Raymond finished fourth at 1:54.69. Dion Dupree ran 1:58.47, good for seventh and DeVon Dupree came in 11th with a time of 1:59.77.

Ishaan Singh finished 10th in the men's 3,000 with a time of 8:37.58. Ian Kirk (11th, 8:40.38), Jorge Estrella (13th, 8:44.55), Kyle Johnson (21st, 8:50.15), and Dominic Baciocco (24th, 9:01.61) also ran.

"It was a great meet for us to open up track season," head coach Felipe Montoro said. "I was really pleased with how we competed yesterday and today. I was most impressed with the progress of Dion Dupree and Ian Kirk. Those guys have really made a big jump in performance. The mile was a nice event for us this trip as well. I can't wait to come back in February to give it another go."

In the women's distance medley, JJ Escalera, Tatum Holloway, Sophia Morris, and Hannah Covington finished in fourth at 12:41.63.

Irene Nagasaka led the Broncos in the women's 800 in 14th place with a time of 2:24.27. Gabby Navarro came in 15th at 2:25.55, a personal best, and Elizabeth Elcik was 17th in 2:27.82.

In the women's 1-mile run, Kayla Neumann led Santa Clara with a time of 5:24.83, good for 14th. Katie Castelli finished in 17th at 5:32.62.

In the women's 3,000, Kinsey Hall finished in fourth with a time of 10:10.4. Abbey Meck finished in 10th at 10:26.19, Kaitlyn Twadell was 14th at 10:47.55, Maiya Fujiwara was 15th at 10:49.82, and Hope Olbricht was 16th at 10:54.64.
