Broncos Split On Second Day of Julian Fraser Memorial

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara men's water polo split their two games played on the second day of action at the Julian Fraser Memorial, first defeating Cal State Fullerton 12-9 before falling in a hard-fought battle against Fordham, 12-10. The Broncos (10-10, 0-2) will look to finish off the annual home tournament on a high note on Sunday as they take on No. 20 Brown. The ball is set to drop at 9:20 a.m. PT and will be streamed live on ESPN+. 

Game One - #19 Santa Clara 12, Cal State Fullerton 9

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Reese Jenican was driving catalyst in the Broncos' win over the Titans, scoring a career-high five goals while also drawing four exclusions.
  • It was a tight affair in the first half with Jenican scoring two late goals in the second period to give the Broncos an 8-6 advantage going into the break.
  • Jenican scored two more in the third period to help push the score to a three-goal lead at the end of the the third, and Cody Ferguson opened the fourth with a quick goal to make it an unsurmountable four-goal affair at 12-8. 
  • Harrison Labrosse made 10 saves in the net. 
  • Gavin Fisher also turned in a great outing with a game-best three assists and two goals for five points. Zach Fales also impressed with a hat trick to increase his team-leading season goal tally.
Game Two - #14 Fordham 12, #19 Santa Clara 10 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Broncos held an early lead with a 4-2 advantage after one period and 7-4 lead at the half, but was unable to contain the potent Fordham attack in the second half. 
  • Fordham scored four unanswered goals to close out the third and open the fourth period to erase the deficit and grab a 9-8 advantage.
  • Chase Raisin answered to tie the game at 9-9, but Fordham punched back with two more goals to take a two-score advantage. Gojko Kapovich scored with 4:35 remaining to cut it back to a one-goal deficit, but that was the last time the Broncos would find the back of the net.
  • Raisin finished with a hat trick, as did Fales - all in the first half. Bennett Stafford also scored two goals in the losing effort. 
  • Kapovich had a team-best three assists to go with his late goal. 
  • Harrison Labrosse made eight total stops in the net. 
 

NEXT UP

  • The Broncos will wrap up the Julian Fraser Memorial Tournament tomorrow at 9:20 a.m. PT against No. 20 Brown.
