LOS ANGELES – No. 19 Santa Clara men's water polo bounced back on day two of the Overnght/MPSF Invitational with a pair of victories thanks in part to a big day from junior
Zach Fales, who scored nine goals across the two matches. The Broncos took down Pomona-Pitzer, 11-8, in the morning session and capped off the day with an upset victory over 14th-ranked Cal Baptist. Santa Clara (6-4) will play in the ninth place game against UC San Diego tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. PT.
Game One - #19 Broncos 11, Pomona-Pitzer 8
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- The Broncos grabbed control early by scoring six unanswered goals and held a 7-3 lead at the half.
- Out of the intermission, Santa Clara quickly stretched their lead 11-5 and held on to the advantage despite Pomona-Pitzer scoring the final three goals of the game.
- Fales led the way offensively with four goals while Chase Raisin found the back of the net twice.
- Gojko Kapovic was once again the leading assist man with four on the morning while Billy Barry added a pair of his own.
- Barry, Cody Ferguson and Matt Somers each came away with a pair of steals.
- Owen Van Stralen was tasked with the start in the net and notched a career-high 15 saves in his 32 minutes.
Game Two - #19 Broncos 12, #14 Cal Baptist 11
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Unlike the victory over Pomonza-Pitzer, things were never easy against the 14th-ranked Lancers.
- The teams were tied at 7-7 at the half. After trading goals to start the third, the Broncos took a three-goal advantage as Barry scored the go-ahead and Ferguson scored on consecutive possessions.
- Cal Baptist (6-7) punched back with three unanswered scores of their own, the last of which tied the game at 11-11 with just 1:21 remaining.
- As he had done all day, Fales took charge inside the final minute and scored the game-winning goal with just over 30 seconds to play. The defense then forced a final turnover and the Broncos picked up one of their biggest victories of the young season.
- Fales had another dominating effort with five goals, two assists and two steals.
- Barry and Ferguson each finished with two goals while Gavin Fisher and Bennett Stafford each had a pair of assists.
- Freshman Harrison Labrosse once again got the starting nod in the goal and finished with 12 saves.
