Freshmen Lead Charge in Women's Water Polo Battle vs. No. 12 LMU

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara battled throughout the match and despite the defensive performance from No. 12 LMU (18-2, 1-0) the Broncos were able to put on a freshmen showcase, with Evelyn McLaughlin and Malaya Wright notching two goals each. The final score at Sullivan Aquatic Center was 21-8. 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Broncos faced an early challenge, but quickly rallied with a fantastic play from Chloe Morrison, connecting with Annika Burks to start their scoring streak in the first period. Despite LMU's initial lead, the Broncos displayed resilience as Wright narrowed the gap to 5-2.

  • LMU controlled the second period, unable to give the Broncos the ball. The score at the end of the first half was 15-2. 

  • In the third period, McLaughlin's consecutive goals energized the Broncos, demonstrating their offensive capabilities. The team's tenacity paid off as they held LMU scoreless for a significant portion of the period, with goals from Wright and Libby Slater.

  • Two minutes into the fourth period, Kate Rodman found her first goal of the day, cutting the lead to ten, 17-7, but LMU was able to go on a three point unanswered run at 20-7. Airi Seib, the birthday girl, had the final goal for the Broncos, finishing off the conference match-up 21-8. 

  • Though the final score favored LMU at 21-8, the Broncos' performance showcased their determination and potential for future success.

  • Liyara Senadheera started in goal, finishing with three saves and one steal. Haley Tassell came in the second half and only allowed four goals on three saves.

  • The Broncos will face Pacific in another conference game on March 16th.
