Men's Water Polo Starts Princeton Invitational with Split

Zach Fales scored four goals and notched eight assists in two games Friday.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 PRINCETON, N.J. — Four different Broncos posted three-goal games Friday, as the No. 19 Santa Clara University men's water polo team earned a split on the first day of the Princeton Invitational with a 16-6 win over Iona in the opener and a 15-9 setback versus host No. 6 Princeton in the nightcap at DeNunzio Pool.

The No. 19 Broncos (2-1) extended their win streak against Iona to nine straight (dating to 2013) with a 10-goal, 16-6 blowout of the Gaels (1-4). Reese Jenican and Charlie Engs both scored three goals to lead the Broncos, and Zach Fales powered the offense with a team-best five assists.
 
Santa Clara jumped out to a 7-0 lead after one period and never looked back. Owen Van Stralen was solid in goal for the Broncos, making eight saves. Iona finally got on the board in the second to make it 9-3 at halftime.
 
Fales and Riccardo De Simon both had two goals each to make it four multi-goal scorers for Santa Clara in the game. Gavin Fisher, Ben Kyrillos, Gojko Kapovic, Thomas Wisdom and Luke Baird all netted one goal each. Kapovic added three assists and De Simon notched two.

Santa Clara pulled to within two goals of the host and No. 6-ranked Tigers in the third period, but Princeton would outscore the Broncos 8-4 the rest of the way to pull away and win, 15-9.
 
De Simon and Kapovic both scored three goals to lead Santa Clara's offense. Fales added two goals to give him back-to-back multi-goal games on the day. He also had a team-high three assists to give him eight total across two games.
 
Harrison Labrosse made 10 saves in net for the Broncos, but the Princeton (4-0) offense got out to an early lead and never trailed. The Tigers scored three unanswered in the opening period and held the Broncos scoreless to lead 3-0. They'd lead by as much as 4-0 before Henry Engs tallied SCU's first goal of the game in the second period.

Santa Clara faces Bucknell at 11 a.m. PDT Saturday and closes out the Princeton Invitational on at 9 a.m. PDT Sunday against Wagner.
