No. 14 UC Santa Barbara Pulls Away Late from No. 17 Broncos

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — The No. 17 Santa Clara University men's water polo team rallied to within one after halftime Friday, but No. 14 UC Santa Barbara surged late for a 14-10 non-conference win at Sullivan Aquatic Center, avenging an earlier defeat this season to the Broncos.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Thomas Wisdom converted a five-meter penalty one minute into the third period to pull No. 17 Santa Clara (6-6) within one at 6-5. No. 14 UC Santa Barbara had gone scoreless for the final 3:21 of the second period and nearly 90 more seconds into the third, giving the Broncos a chance to climb back.

  • The Gauchos ended their drought just 22 seconds later to restore a two-goal lead, sparking a decisive 4-1 run the rest of the period for a 10-6 advantage. During that stretch, Santa Clara missed four shots and committed two turnovers.

  • The Broncos rallied in the fourth, cutting the deficit to 11-9 and 12-10 on goals from Riccardo De Simon, Henry Engs and Ashton Brown. But UCSB responded again, capitalizing on another turnover and a missed shot for two more goals to close out a 14-10 win.

  • De Simon tied for the game high with three goals, added an assist for a four-point day, and drew two exclusions. Brown scored twice, chipped in an assist (three points total), and matched a game high with three drawn exclusions. UCSB's Danilo Dragovic and Brock Zamanian also scored three goals apiece.

  • Harrison Labrosse tallied 13 saves in goal for Santa Clara, his second-highest mark this season, while Levi Lentin recorded 10 stops for UCSB.
