Men’s Tennis Signs Nationally Ranked Player from Switzerland

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara men's tennis team signed Alex Bergomi, a nationally ranked player from Wollerau, Switzerland to the 2026 recruiting class. 
 
"The moment I entered and toured the campus I felt like this was the place I wanted to be," said Bergomi.  "I also really liked the project and philosophy of the tennis team and I felt like I could identify with the values of the university.  Therefore, once I got the offer it was a very easy decision for me." 
 
Reaching a high of No. 115 in the Swiss national rankings, Bergomi won the team world cup with the national team at the 2022 ITF World Junior Championships.  He also advanced to the semifinals in both singles and doubles at the Swiss Championships. 
 
Bergomi's mother, Elena Pampoulova, played professionally on the WTA Tour and reached a career-high rankings of No. 38 in doubles and No. 62 in singles as well as playing in the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. 
 
"I am delighted to announce that Alex will be joining us for the Fall of 2026," said Broncos head coach Niall Angus.  "Alex has massive potential and fantastic technical fundamentals that will allow him to grow and improve his game throughout his time at Santa Clara. I expect Alex to make an impact on both the singles and the doubles court and I am excited to work with him. He will be an outstanding addition to the program."
