SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – No. 60 Santa Clara men's tennis team's six-match win streak came to an end against No. 69 UC Santa Barbara, falling 5-2 on Saturday at the Arnhold Tennis Center. The Broncos pushed four of the singles matches to three sets against a stacked Gauchos lineup that featured three nationally ranked players.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Alexander Watanabe Eriksson, who played his freshman year at UC Santa Barbara, returned to his old stomping grounds and defeated the No. 29 singles player in the nation Gianluca Brunkow 2-6, 6-1, 6-4. It was one of two singles wins for No. 60 Santa Clara (7-4) along with John Kim on court six over Matei Gavrea 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-4).
- The two Santa Clara wins came after the Gauchos clinched the match. No. 69 UCSB took the doubles point with the clincher coming on court three 6-3 as Conrad Brown and Charlie Underwood downed Watanabe Eriksson and Lukas Maskow.
- UCSB (7-2) won the first three singles matches including the match clincher by Lucca Liu over Maskow 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 on court two.
- Luca Lemaitre nearly pulled another Bronco win against a ranked opponent but was barely edged out by No. 109 Dominique Rolland in three sets 6-7 (6-8), 6-3, 1-0 (10-6) in the final match of the day.
