SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's water polo team fell in a hard-fought battle 24-8 to the No. 10 ranked Fresno State Bulldogs Saturday at the Sullivan Aquatic Center. The Broncos kept it close in the first two periods, but were outscored 12-2 in the second half. Junior driver
Sydney Maccabe led the Broncos with three goals, while four other players scored at least one goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Two goals from Fresno State started out the scoring, but Maccabe put the Broncos on the board halfway through the first period. Two more goals from the Bulldogs gave them a 4-1 advantage, but Chloe Rizof smashed one into the back of the net for the second goal of the game for the Broncos. A goal from Soph Harvey made it 5-3 to end the first period.
- Back-to-back goals from the Bulldogs made it 7-3, but Maccabe answered again with another goal. Two more Fresno State goals made it 9-5, and a goal from Francesca Moynihan again cut the Bulldogs lead to three. Three straight goals from the Bulldogs gave them a 12-6 lead to end the first half.
- A goal from Kate Rodman made it 13-7, and Maccabe scored her third of the contest for the Broncos, but the Broncos went scoreless for the final 11 minutes of the contest as Fresno State scored nine straight goals taking the game 24-8.
