Women's Tennis Falls to No. 61 Washington State in Season Finale

PULLMAN, Wash. – No. 61 Washington State blanked Santa Clara women's tennis 5-0 in a West Coast Conference match played both outdoors and indoors on Saturday.  The doubles action started outside where the Broncos won the first match before dropping the next two.  Then the rain came down prompting singles play to move indoors on the four courts starting with the No. 1-4 spots in the lineup.

It was the final match of the season for Santa Clara finishing with a 8-12 record overall including 2-4 in the WCC.  The Broncos increased their win total by two games over last season in head coach Allie Will-Van Alstyne's second season on the Mission Campus.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Maxine Murphy was involved in both the doubles and match clinchers.  She defeated Daniella Dimitrova atop the singles lineup 6-2, 6-2 to clinch the match for Washington State (16-7, 6-2 WCC) at 4-0.
  • Santa Clara (8-12, 2-4 WCC) got off to a good start taking the first doubles match on court two when Dimitrova and Anna Rahman beat Elyse Tse and Chisato Kanemaki 6-3.  However, that was the only match the Broncos won the rest of the day as the Cougars won the next two to secure the doubles point.  The No. 44 doubles tandem in the nation, Eva Alvarez Sande and Maxine Murphy handled Jillian Roa and Tian Yu Dong 6-4 to put Washington State up 1-0.
  • Hania Abouelsaad quickly downed Roa 6-1, 6-0 for the first singles win on court four.
  • The Cougars made it 3-0 behind Sande's 6-0, 6-3 win over Velizara Fileva.
  • After Murphy's clincher, Tse finished out her match against Dong for the Cougars' fifth point.
  • SCU did not have an opportunity to finish play on courts five and six with just four courts available indoors and a flight to catch.
