Four Men’s Tennis Players Garner All-WCC Recognitions

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - A quartet of Santa Clara men's tennis players garnered All-West Coast Conference recognitions, the league office announced on Tuesday ahead of the start of the WCC Tournament.

Luca Bluett and John Kim were named to the doubles second team.  Bluett also made singles honorable mention along with Alexander Watanabe Eriksson and Luca Lemaitre

The all-conference voting and major awards were voted on by the eight conference head coaches.

Playing together atop the doubles lineup in 19 of the 22 matches this spring, Bluett, a freshman, and Kim, a junior who transferred from Cal, posted an 11-6 record including 4-2 in league action.  They defeated the No. 69 doubles team of Carson Baker and Jett Middleton from Boise State, 6-4.  The Bronco tandem was named WCC Doubles Team of the Week back on Feb. 11.

In singles play, Bluett was 9-7 in the spring and 2-2 in WCC action.  The London native was in the lineup all season long primarily playing on court four with a 6-3 record but also was 3-3 on court three and 0-1 on court two.

Watanabe Eriksson reached a national ranking of No. 104 after defeating two nationally ranked players.  He defeated No. 29 Gianluca Brunkow of UC Santa Barbara 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 and No. 62 Azuma Visaya of Hawai'i 6-1, 6-3 in back-to-back matches to be named WCC Singles Player of the Week.  During the dual match season, the junior from Stockholm, Sweden was 8-11 playing mostly on court one.

Lemaitre had an 8-4 record going 4-3 on court two and 4-1 in court three.  He faced four ranked players going 0-1.  In five WCC matches, the sophomore from Mérida, Mexico played once on court one and four times on court two, getting a straight sets win over Saint Mary's Thibaud Maxant.  Lemaitre also delivered the 3-all clincher against Wichita State.

No. 70 Santa Clara closed the regular season with a 14-8 overall record, 5-2 in conference play to finish tied for second in the WCC.  They enter this week's WCC Tournament having been ranked for 10 straight weeks.  On Thursday, they face sixth-seeded Saint Mary's in the opening round of the WCC Tournament at the Aztec Tennis Complex on the campus of San Diego State.

San Diego swept the three major awards as Oliver Tarvet was named WCC Player of the Year while Adiren Berrut took home the Freshman of the Year award.  Head Coach Ryan Keckly was named Coach of the Year.
