SAN BRUNO, Calif. – The West Coast Conference recognized two members of the Santa Clara men's tennis team with All-Academic honors on Wednesday. Alexander Watanabe Eriksson was named to the WCC All-Academic Team and Luca Lemaitre was named as honorable mention.
At the conclusion of each athletic season, the WCC selects an all-academic squad for each WCC-sponsored sport. To be considered, a student-athlete must maintain at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average, while being a starter or important reserve (participate in at least 50 percent of the institution's completed contests) with legitimate athletic credentials and have at least sophomore athletic and academic standing with at least one year in residence completed at the nominating institution.
Watanabe Eriksson, a junior, has a cumulative grade point average of 3.616 to earn one of the 13 spots on the All-Academic Team. The economics major has an 8-11 singles record and is 2-1 against ranked opponents playing primarily atop the lineup. He defeated the ranked players in back-to-back matches and was named WCC Singles Player of the Week when he took down No. 29 Gianluca Brunkow of UC Santa Barbara and No. 62 Azuma Visaya of Hawai'i. After the wins, Watanabe Eriksson entered the ITA singles rankings at No. 104. In doubles, he was in the line up in 19 of the 22 matches playing at all line up spots.
Lemaitre, a finance major, has a 3.300 GPA. The sophomore played in 19 singles matches and posted an 8-4 record primarily at No. 2 or 3 in the lineup. He went 4-3 at No. 2 and 4-1 at No. 3 with one of those wins in a 3-all clincher against Wichita State. In doubles, he was in the lineup 17 times and played mostly at the No. 2 spot.
This is the first All-Academic honor for both Watanabe Eriksson and Lemaitre.
No. 70 Santa Clara finished the regular season with a 14-8 overall record including 5-2 in conference play to finish tied for second in the WCC and earned a three seed in the WCC Tournament. On Thursday, they face sixth-seeded Saint Mary's in the opening round at the Aztec Tennis Complex on the campus of San Diego State.
