SAN BRUNO, Calif. – Santa Clara men's tennis players
Luca Bluett and
John Kim took home the West Coast Conference Doubles Team of the Week honors after the duo defeated a pair of nationally ranked doubles teams at the ITA Kickoff Weekend tournament.
Last Friday, Bluett and Kim downed the nation's No. 2 ranked doubles team of Petar Jovanovic and Benito Sanchez Martinez from Mississippi State, 6-4, on court one to clinch the doubles point. It was the lone tally for the Broncos who lost 4-1 to the No. 7-ranked Bulldogs.
SCU returned for an early start to Saturday's match against Alabama with a 6 a.m. PT first serve as Bluett and Kim beat No.12 ranked Jacob Olar and Andrii Zimnokh from Alabama, 6-2, on court one. The Broncos would go on to secure the doubles point and take three singles matches to defeat the Crimson Tide 4-2 to close out the ITA Kickoff Weekend.
Bluett and Kim are 3-0 in dual matches this spring, all coming atop the doubles lineup. In the fall, they became the first-ever Santa Clara men's tennis players to play in the NCAA Individual Championships.
This is the second time they've been named WCC Doubles Team of the Week.
Santa Clara next plays at home against Oregon on Sunday. First serve is at 11 a.m. PT.
