No. 18 Broncos Battle Back but Fall in OT to SJSU

Box Score SANTA CLARA , Calif. - No. 18 Santa Clara men's water polo scored four unanswered goals in the fourth period to erase an 11-7 deficit and send Saturday's WCC match against No. 14 San Jose State to overtime, but the Broncos were unable to take advantage of the extra time, falling 12-11 in a thriller at Sullivan Aquatic Center.

Leading 7-5 at the half and 9-6 at the end of the third period, SJSU looked to be in control of the rivalry contest, especially after tacking on a quick goal to open the fourth to make it 10-6, but Charlie Engs scored on the next possession to flip some momentum back in the Broncos' favor. The Spartans answered to regain the four-goal advantage with 6:40 remaining, however that was the final goal SCU would surrender for the remainder of regulation as they began a furious comeback bid. Imme van der Schaaf and Henry Engs both took advantage of 5-meter penalty attempts to get the scoring spree started, and the Broncos got a takeaway leading to a third-straight score courtesy of Riccardo De Simon with 3:45 remaining.

Trailing 11-10, Santa Clara (12-12, 1-4) continued to clamp down on defense with Harrison Labrosse turning away multiple scoring attempts. With under two minutes remaining in regulation, De Simon came away with a steal to flip the possession and lead to Ashton Brown depositing the game-tying goal with 1:27 remaining. Following another defensive stop, SCU had one last chance on offense in the closing moments of the period, but was unable to get a good look on the goal. SJSU fired off a desperation shot at the buzzer which was easily knocked away by Labrosse to send the game to overtime.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first overtime period, and the stalemate continued well into the second period before the Spartans (11-11, 2-3) finally struck on a powerplay opportunity with 45 seconds remaining. SCU had a chance to tie on their final possession, but the shot clock ran out before they could get an attempt off. The loss brought an end to the Broncos' four-game winning streak.

Labrosse finished with a season-best 12 saves to go with a pair of steals. van der Schaaf led the way in scoring with three goals followed by two-goal games from the Engs Brothers, Charlie and Henry. Henry Engs also tallied four assists and had a steal. De Simon tallied five steals to go with his lone goal and an assist.

Santa Clara has two regular-season games remaining beginning Friday, Nov. 6, at Pacific before returning to the Sullivan Aquatic Center to take on Air Force on Senior Day.
