SAN DIEGO – Luca Lemaitre was named MVP and the Santa Clara men's tennis team finished first among eight schools at the San Diego Veterans Classic that concluded on Sunday. Hosted by the University of San Diego at the Hogan Tennis Center, Lemaitre won three singles and one doubles match to capture the MVP honors. Over the three day tournament, Santa Clara won a total of 12 matches to earn 12 points - winning all six on Friday, two on Saturday and four more on Sunday's finale - to finish atop the eight team standings, one win/point ahead of second place Grand Canyon and UC Irvine.
The eight schools that participated in the tournament included San Diego, Navy, Washington, Oregon, Grand Canyon, Cal, UC Irvine and Santa Clara.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- On Sunday, The Broncos picked up three singles and a doubles victory facing opponents from San Diego, Grand Canyon and San Diego State.
- Lemaitre beat San Diego's Nico Baena 7-5, 7-5 in singles.
- Ferran Redza also had a strong tournament with five total wins - three in singles and two in doubles. He beat Victor Lima of Grand Canyon 6-1, 7-5 and in doubles, teamed up with Luca Bluett to take care of San Diego State's Finn Willman and Brock Anderson 6-2.
- Tiago Boschmans also won his singles match, downing Willman 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
- Both Lemaitre and Redza won their singles matches each day of the tournament.
