SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara women's tennis got off to a strong start against Washington State taking the doubles point and the first set in three of the six singles matches before eventually falling 4-2 in a West Coast Conference battle on Thursday at the Degheri Tennis Center.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Santa Clara (7-14, 3-5 WCC) took a 1-0 lead after the doubles wins by Lizanne Boyer/Juliette Krumholz and Tian Yu Dong/Ashley Katz. Dong and Katz beat Chisato Kanemaki/Maxine Murphy 6-3 on court one to secure the point.
- Washington State (15-6, 7-1 WCC) won the first three singles matches to pull ahead 3-1. Kanemaki was the first Cougar to win her singles match, downing Dong in straight sets 6-2, 6-2 on court five. Martina Puvill followed suit with another straight set victory over Anna Rahman 6-3, 6-2 on court three.
- Boyer nearly leveled the match on court two against No. 120-ranked Murphy coming back from being down 5-1 in the third set before losing in a tiebreak. Murphy held on for a victory 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).
- Katz temporarily stopped the bleeding, closing the gap to 3-2 with a three set triumph over Yura Nakagawa 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 on court four but Washington State got the match clincher shortly after from No. 90 Eva Alvarez Sande.
- Alvarez Sande took care of Daniella Dimitrova 7-6 (7-2), 4-6, 6-0 atop the lineup to help Washington State improve to 7-1 in WCC action, good for second place in the league standings.
