The No. 16 ranked Santa Clara men's water polo team opened the 2007 season with a comfortable 15-2 win over Queens College. The match was played in Princeton, where the Broncos will also compete in the Princeton Invitational this weekend. Head coach Keith Wilbur is a graduate of Princeton.
The Broncos win was a total team effort, with 12 different players getting in on the scoring. Liam Farrell, Stephen Hobbs, and Tommy Kelly all had two goals apiece. Josh Early, Mark Soares, Mitchell Klipa, Jeff Welch, Mike Detoy, Andrew Fitch, Nicholas Poggetti, Matthew Martin, and Tommy Hendrickson all scored one goal as well.
Robert Callahan and Chris Jones split time in the net, with Callahan recording five blocks in the first half and Jones getting four blocks and two steals while playing the second half.
Farrel added two steals to go along with his two goals. Charlie Moore also had two assists and Welch added two kickouts drawn to go with his goal.
Wilbur said that he expects the competition to get harder as the tournament goes along.
