Santa Clara vs. UC Riverside Box Score
Fresno, Calif. – Santa Clara posted a 2-0
record on Saturday in its final day of play at the Fresno State
Classic with a 3-1 win over host-Fresno State and a 3-2
come-from-behind win over UC-Riverside. Santa Clara is 2-1 on
the young season and plays at Sacramento State on Wed., Sept. 1
before playing Idaho and Pacific in Stockton next weekend.
Santa Clara defeated Fresno 3-1 (25-18, 28-26, 25-15 and
25-14). Santa Clara defeated UC Riverside 3-2 (25-18, 20-25,
21-25, 25-14 and 15-9).
Sophomore Kaleigh Durket, a transfer from Colgate, was named to
the Fresno State Classic All-Tournament team after posting
back-to-back matches with 20+ kills in each.
"With everything considered, I liked our chances to beat Oregon
on Friday, but we needed all of our weapons to win and we don't
have a full roster playing due to our injuries. Oregon is a good
team. With that said, we played much better today vs. Fresno
State" said Bronco head coach Jon Wallace. "This morning we played
well. We decided to not play Katherine Douglas today due to her
injury. Kayla
Lommori and Kaleigh Durket
had good matches for us. Kaleigh also had a good match tonight,
putting together back-to-back games with 20+ kills in each match.
Dana
Knudsen played a big part. Emily
Burke and Bridget
O'Hara also played really well. Emily served really well
against Riverside. We did a really nice job this
morning."
Not setting Durket enough vs. Oregon was an issue in Friday's
match Wallace felt, but Burke had more confidence in her today and
it showed in both of their games. "Kaleigh stepped up and
asked for the ball more. She was very successful early on and had a
really good game. We kept going to her, she found the hole in the
block and took great swings all day long," added Wallace.
In the first match vs. Fresno State, Santa Clara knocked down 55
kills, hitting .258, adding 67 digs and five service aces. Fresno
State knocked down 40 kills, hitting .060, adding 51 digs and four
service aces. Santa Clara had 7.5 team blocks and Fresno
State collected 16.0, including six block solos.
Santa Clara was led by Durket's 20 kills as she hit .655 (20K,
1E, 29A). She also collected 10 digs. Lommori had 14
kills and 11 digs. O'Hara led both teams with 25 digs and
added two assists as well. Burke had 49 assists, three kills
and four digs, also adding two aces. Knudsen had nine kills,
hitting .533. Lexi
Williamson had 15 digs and three kills. Only one Fresno
State player had double-digit kills with Korrin Wild putting down
10 kills.
In the second match vs. UC Riverside, Santa Clara knocked down
60 kills, hitting .182, adding 76 digs and 13 service aces. UC
Riverside knocked down 44 kills, hitting .188, adding 56 digs and
seven service aces. Santa Clara had 3.0 team blocks and UC
Riverside collected 14.0, including 22 block assists.
Santa Clara was led by Durket's 21 kills, hitting .472 with nine
digs. Knudsen scored 19 kills from the middle, hitting
.344. Lommori had 11 kills and 14 digs to collect her first
double-double this season. O'Hara picked up 23 digs and one
ace. Burke scored a season-high 55 assists with five aces,
four digs and a kill.
"This was a really successful weekend for us in terms of playing
hard and finding a way to fight through it and find a way to win,
especially for this young team," added Wallace. "We were able
to get our rhythm back even without our "A" game, playing our "B"
game. I think we found out this weekend we need to be stronger and
find our "A" game every time out. Any team can beat us if they
don't. I think we did that. It was a great weekend because we had
adversity that we inflicted upon ourselves, but found a way to
succeed and that's a sign of a good team."
