Broncos Sweep Day Two of Rodeo; Upset No. 19 Pacific

By: Student Assistant John Nash '13

SANTA CLARA, Calif - Claire Eadington's goal with 4 seconds left lifted the Santa Clara women's water polo team to a sweep on day two of the Rodeo tournament. The Broncos downed Cal St. Monterey Bay 9-7 in the morning, and upset No 19 Pacific in overtime 8-7 at the Sullivan Aquatic Center. With the wins the Broncos improve to 7-8 on the season and 5-2 in WWPA play.

Santa Clara returns to action Sunday against No. 16 Indiana at 10 a.m. See below for complete results of tournament action.

In the first game of the day versus Cal St. Monterey Bay, Santa Clara's two meter play helped guide them to the win as Laura Espinosa and Laura Burtness  each tallied two goals a piece. Sarah Safir also added two, and Claire Eadington, Marina Allen, and Jamie Swartz each found the back of the net once.

"We did a good job of getting production out of two meters, and not just goal scoring but drawing ejections" said Bronco head coach Keith Wilbur. "We had a hard time scoring our six on fives, but we stepped up and hit some big shots in the fourth. I think we played great defense throughout. Caitlin Espe did a great job guarding set and had a couple big steals near the end."

In the most exciting game of the day, Santa Clara upset No. 19 Pacific in overtime. Espinosa led the Broncos with three goals, while Taylor Harkins and Claire Eadington added two. Jenny Anderson also found the back of the net on a strong inside move. Caitlin Espe and Whitney Allen helped anchor a strong Santa Clara defense. Harkins put the Broncos up 6-4 with a penalty shot at 3:38, but the Tigers came storming back to force overtime. After both teams scored in the first overtime period, Eadington's scored from the outside with four seconds left in the second overtime period to seal the victory. Stephanie Clements started in the cage and made 13 saves.

"It was a big improvement from last time we played them" said Wilbur. "The big difference was our defense, and we wanted to test ourselves and see if we could play another level of defense.  The offense was stagnant at points, but the defense was excellent throughout the game. Caitlin did a great job guarding two meters, and Whit was tremendous collecting five steals. Steph played a great game in the cage."
