Box Score SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In thrilling come-from-behind fashion, No. 20 Santa Clara women's soccer topped San Diego by a final of 2-1 on Thursday night. After trailing at the half, the Broncos came out and scored two second half goals for the victory.
Grace Cutler scored the first goal for the Broncos (11-5-0, 4-1-0 WCC) on an assist from Megan Crosson and Julie Vass added the game-winner late in the second half. Andi Tostanoski picked up three saves. The Toreros (3-11-2, 1-4-0 WCC) were led by a goal from Caitlin Kretzschmar and an assist from Jacquelin Altschuld. Michelle Craft made six saves.
"We'll definitely take the win even though we didn't play that well in the first half," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "Credit to San Diego who put in a good ball on a corner kick to score and credit to our guys for coming back. We worked very hard to win it at the end and created a ton of chances. Our biggest mistake today was not getting our shots on goal. We want to have over 50-percent of our shots on goal and if we had done that we could have had an easier game. But San Diego worked very hard and was well organized. We know we're playing for at least a share of first place on Saturday and could take the outright lead so it's a big game. We're honoring our four outstanding seniors on Saturday as well and welcoming back our alums so we're looking for it to be a very special day."
San Diego struck first in the 25th minute off a corner kick. Altschuld sent a corner into the box and among the sea of bodies Kretzschmar was able to knock the ball into the back of the net and make the score 1-0.
The Broncos drew even in the 60th minute. Crosson dribbled into the box and centered a pass on the ground. It was deflected off the post and Cutler was able to finish and tie the score at 1-all.
The Toreros almost got the lead back in the 71st minute. Julianne De Armas got behind the defense and was one-on-one with Tostanoski. She took a low shot to the left post but Tostanoski came up huge with the save.
Santa Clara took its first lead of the night in the 86th minute off the foot of Vass. Cutler took a shot that was saved but the rebound went right to Vass who was able to blast a shot into the back of the net to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead.
Santa Clara returns to the field for senior day and alumni day on Saturday at 1 p.m. vs. No. 5 BYU in a critical match in the WCC standings.
