SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Despite taking an early lead against San Jose State, the Santa Clara women's tennis team fell to the Spartans 4-1 at home.

The Broncos started off strong by taking the doubles point in the beginning matches of the day.  "I'm really happy with our doubles outcomes; our girls played great," said head coach Ben Cabell. 

The No. 1 doubles team of Daniella Silva and Nabila Farah took down Julianna Bacelar and Marie Klocker of San Jose State, and the No. 2 team of Chelby Cooke and Delphine Rouvillois knocked off Sybille Gauvain and Gaelle Rey, both by a score of 6-2.

But the Spartans swung the dual match in singles.  "San Jose State was very good and very deep," added Cabell.  "They came out on top, but this was a good effort from our girls."

Playing at No. 6 and No. 5 singles, Danielle Zinn and Zeina El Tawil both went down 6-0, 6-0 against Malin Cubucku and Abbie Pahz.  Danielle Silva was defeated by Julianna Bacelar 6-2, 6-0.  Although she ripped off five games, Chelby Cooke was unable to overtake Marie Klocker and lost 6-1, 6-4.

The Broncos are 2-1 in season play.  They next take the court at noon against UC Davis on Sat., Feb. 7.  This is followed by a match versus Cal Poly at 2 pm Feb. 8.

"Even though the results were against us we did some really good things today.  We're going to use this to get ready for upcoming matches," finished Cabell.
