Second Half Goal Drops Broncos in Tight Game vs. No. 7 Penn State

Box Score

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In a tight game against a top-10 team, Santa Clara women's soccer fell to No. 7 Penn State by a final of 1-0. The loss puts the Broncos at 4-3-0 on the season while the Nittany Lions are 5-1-1.

Santa Clara returns to the field Fri., Sept. 18 at 5 p.m. vs. CSU Northridge.

"Penn State is one of the top teams in the country and we played them pretty evenly," said Santa Clara head coach Jerry Smith. "We battled them and were close in terms of dangerous chances. We had a couple of breakdowns on their goal but their player had a great goal. I'm proud of our team today. We played a top-10 team very evenly in a game that could have gone either way or finished in a draw. We feel very good about that and we grew as a team today. These games will help make you the team you want to be at the end of the season."

Jordan Jesolva and Jenna Roering led the Bronco offense with two shots and one on goal each. Andi Tostanoski picked up five saves in net.

Santa Clara's best chance to score in the first half came in the 19th minute off the foot of Roering. The ball got loose and Roering tried to run it down but got her foot on it just before the goalkeeper slid in to stop the shot.

The Nittany Lions broke through in the 63rd minute to take a 1-0 lead. Mallory Weber blasted a shot from the edge of the box that went into the upper right corner to the net to break the scoreless tie.
