Women's Soccer Tops Portland 4-1 on the Road

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. – On the road for the first time in conference play, Santa Clara women's soccer topped rival Portland 4-1 Friday night.

The Broncos (7-6-1, 2-1 WCC) dominated the Pilots (3-9-1, 0-3 WCC) in the attacking third, firing off 18 shots and putting 13 on goal. Kelsey Turnbow led the way a pair of goals to take the team-lead with six on the year.

Turnbow's first came in the 40th minute when she fired from just inside the box and to the upper-right corner of the net to make it 2-0. She made it 3-0 in the 69th off assists from Maddy Gonzalez and Delanie Baie Pridham.

Julie Doyle scored the first of the game after a nice run down the field. Doyle had two defenders on her and some nifty footwork caused both to fall. After she got inside the box, Doyle put another move on two more defenders and hit a shot right between them and past the goalkeeper that gave Santa Clara a 1-0 lead.

Portland got one back in the 75th minute when Kim Hazlett ran down a long ball and took a touch to get around Melissa Lowder before finishing in the empty net.

Pridham added some more insurance with her first of the year in the 80th. Maria Sanchez and Machaela George teamed-up to get the ball over the defense and Pridham chipped the ball over the oncoming keeper to make it 4-1.

NOTES

  • Santa Clara is now 19-15-3 all-time against Portland. The Broncos have won four in a row over the Pilots.
  • This was the third time Santa Clara has scored four goals this year after not accomplishing the feat last year. The other two this year were at Seattle (Sept. 11) and vs. LMU (Sept. 29).
  • Twenty-one players got into the match for the Broncos.
  • It was the second time this season and second in the last three games that Santa Clara has had four assists in a match. The Broncos also did it against LMU (Sept. 29).

QUOTABLE
"We were happy to score four goals and happy to get the win today. I thought we played better as the game went on and a number of people contributed both in the starting lineup and off the bench. We're looking forward to putting together a weekend where we play consecutive good games."

Head coach Jerry Smith
