Volleyball Drops Four-Setter at Pepperdine

Box Score

MALIBU, Calif. — Allison Kantor had a 12-kill, 12-dig double-double for Santa Clara Volleyball on Thursday, but Pepperdine's Shannon Scully (15 kills), Hannah Frohling (14) and Heidi Dyer (13) combined for a balanced offensive effort to lead the Waves to a four-set win. Pepperdine defeated the Broncos 26-24, 25-16, 17-25, 25-13 in a West Coast Conference matchup at Firestone Fieldhouse.

Blossom Sato had 48 assists for the Waves (14-7, 8-3 WCC) to lead all players and Hana Lishman added a match-best 21 digs. Pepperdine hit .224 and held Santa Clara to a .155 hitting percentage.

The Broncos (6-17, 1-10) outblocked the Waves 14-6 behind a strong effort from Taylor Odom, who had seven blocks on the night; both the team's block total and Odom's individual effort were the second-best marks in single match this season. Tessie Powers had a 16-assist, 11-dig double-double and Liliana Light led Santa Clara with 19 assists. Chloe Loreen led the Broncos with 13 digs.

Scully produced nine of her 15 kills for the match in the opening set, in which the Waves hit a match-best .341. She sparked a 3-0 run that put the hosts ahead 21-20, added two more kills to make it a 5-1 spree that gave Pepperdine a 23-21 lead and came through with the kill to put the Waves on set point at 24-23. Following Scully's service error that extended the set, Sato notched a kill to put Pepperdine back on set point at 25-24, then set up Frohling for the frame-clinching kill.

In the second stanza, Pepperdine won five of the first six points and went on to break a 7-all tie with a 9-1 run. They led by at least six points the rest of the way to take a 2-0 advantage.

Santa Clara had its best offensive set of the night in the third frame as the team hit .333 and got five kills from Michelle Shaffer. The Broncos won six straight points and nine of 10 early to pull ahead 11-5. They maintained at least a three-point gap en route to taking the set, which Odom capped with a kill.

Pepperdine answered Santa Clara's effort in the fourth set, using a 9-1 run to take a 12-4 lead. Frohling helped the Waves close out the match on an 8-1 stretch by producing their last six kills, including five in the last six points of the night.
