Box Score SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara men's soccer fell 2-0 to No. 7 Portland on Sunday's Senior Night conceding two first half goals in the 2018 home finale at Stevens Stadium.
The Broncos (5-9-1, 1-4 WCC) looked to carry the momentum from Friday night's victory over Gonzaga when it picked up its first conference win of the season, along with the energy provided by the Senior Night crowd, however, the team came out flat giving up goals in the 19th and 42nd minutes.
Portland (11-1-3, 3-1-1 WCC) got on the board first when Greg Tracey, who came in a substitute in the 13th minute, picked up a loose ball at the top of the 18-yard box and fired a left-footed shot to the top right corner to put the Pilots up, 1-0.
Santa Clara had an opportunity to level the match five minutes later in the 24th minute when
Miles Robinson's shot from the right side went just wide of the left post.
The Pilots extended its lead to 2-0 in the 42nd minute when RJ Stretch delivered a service from the left side to Jake Arteaga outside the six-yard box. Arteaga reached with his left foot to shoot the ball that Bronco goalkeeper
Dakota Havlick got his bottom hand on while diving to his left but the ball then ricocheted off his right hand as he was hitting the ground, sending the ball into the net.
Portland outshot Santa Clara 6-3 in the first half and 10-6 overall. Havlick was credited with four saves in the match including a penalty kick save in the 87th minute to keep the Broncos within striking distance. However, the two goal deficit was too much for the Broncos to overcome.
