Men's Soccer With a 1-1 Draw Against San Diego State on Saturday

Box Score

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara men's soccer played to a 1-1 draw in double overtime against San Diego State in a tough, physical match which saw a total of 44 fouls including the Broncos being a player short the final 46 minutes of action.

San Diego State (2-2-1) had a golden opportunity to draw first blood in the 15th minute when the Broncos were called for a handball inside the box.  The subsequent penalty kick by left-footer Pablo Pelaez hit the right post as the match remained scoreless until just before the half.

Santa Clara (2-2-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute on Terrell Smith's first career goal when he found the back of the net with his left foot inside the six on a header pass from Sakari Carter off Presten Manthey's free kick.

Holding onto a one goal lead, Broncos goalkeeper Guillem Badenes Mecho was issued a straight red card in the 64th minute.   On a pass that was played back by Alejandro Perez, Badenes Mecho got his pocket picked by Lakota Santos well outside the box and tackled Santos as he was making a free run to the goal.

Redshirt junior Henning Jolivet replaced Badenes Mecho as Santa Clara played the rest of the match shorthanded.

The Aztecs took advantage in the 76th minute on Keegan Kelly's equalizer.  The midfielder headed in the free kick from Tristin Weber to beat Jolivet for the equalizer.

Despite giving up a goal, Jolivet played solidly as the Aztects peppered with 15 shots after his insertion into the match, making five saves.

At the end of regulation, Smith had another opportunity to score but as he raced down the left flank chasing a long ball, Aztec goalkeeper Max Watkin made a diving save just outside the six as time expired.

In overtime, neither team could breakthrough as the Aztecs outshot the Broncos 8-1 as they settled for a 1-1 draw.
