Box Score SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara men's soccer exploded for five goals, all from different players, including career firsts by
Presten Manthey and
Dylan Carrubba to bookend the scoring in the 5-1 win over San Jose State on Friday at Stevens Stadium.
Making his first career start as a Bronco, Manthey opened the scoring in the 26th minute on a feed from
Terrell Smith after a pair of San Jose State (0-3) shots hit the woodwork. A streaking Smith was on the receiving end of a through ball from just inside midfield to the edge of the box before finding Manthey, who calmly slotted it past the flat-footed Spartan goalkeeper, Rodrigo Reyes-Zavalza.
Manthey wasn't finished there as he assisted in the next two goals, both setup by defensive pressures.
In the 31st minute, Ruiz Duran forced a turnover inside the center circle that popped to the feet of Manthey who passed it back to Ruiz Duran before chipping it over Reyes-Zavalza to give the Broncos a 2-0 advantage.
Holding a two-goal advantage at the half, the Broncos quickly scored their third goal just a minute into the second 45. Once again, the Bronco defensive pressure forced a Spartan turnover deep in their zone. Quick passes from Manthey and Bravo found Agosti six-yards away where he blasted a left-footed shot that found the back of the net in the far post.
The Spartans got a goal back in the 60th minute from Eduardo Buenfil to cut the Broncos lead to 3-1 but five minutes later
Alan Camacho Soto's header off of
Alejandro Barajas' corner kick gave the Broncos a three goal cushion once again.
Carrubba put the finishing touches in the 69th minute with the fifth and final goal of the match off a Camacho Soto steal and assist.
