Women's Water Polo Splits on Opening Day of Wolverine Invitational

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Santa Clara women's water polo split its opening two games at the Wolverine Invitational.

The Broncos (7-5) defeated Iona, 10-7, after falling to seventh-ranked Michigan, 15-3, on Saturday.

The six-team tournament concludes Sunday.

Michigan 15, Santa Clara 3

Erin Neustrom posted a game-high four goals and Anne Rankin and Sofie Pontré each scored twice for the Wolverines who cruised to a 15-3 win.

Each team was credited with 26 shots, but the Wolverines were much more efficient at the offensive end.

Michigan scored five goals in the opening 5 minutes of the game and the lead grew to 10-1 early in the third quarter on a goal from Ella Abbott.

Sophie Jackson started in goal and picked up the for Michigan whose three netminders combined for 14 saves.

Emma Allegrucci, Natalie Brauser and Maggie Oys each scored for the Broncos who were 2-for-9 with the extra attacker.

Santa Clara 10, Iona 7

Hailey Eberle scored three times and Emma Allegrucci and Maggie Oys each had two goals for the Broncos who led the entire way in a 10-7 win over Iona.

Jordan van Reeken scored twice for the Gaels who were held to just 3 of 12 on the power play.

Iona pulled within 4-3 midway through the second quarter on a goal by Mia Tovar, but the Broncos scored four of the next five.

Eberle and Lauren Baglietto scored within a 2-minute span in the third period to increase the lead to 7-3.

Iona was never closer than three goals the rest of the game.

Lydia Dadd made nine blocks to secure the win in net.

Allegrucci and Baglietto drew three kickouts apiece.

NOTES
Emma Allegrucci, Maddy Gomes, Kelly Frumkin, Maggie Oys, Hailey Eberle and Lydia Dadd started both games. Gabi Sicat started against Michigan and Malena Nguyen vs. Iona.

NEXT UP
The Broncos close out play in the Wolverine Invitational on Sunday with games against St. Francis and Long Beach State. Santa Clara starts a three-game homestand on Friday against San Diego State in a matchup of Golden Coast Conference foes.
