Box Score SANTA CLARA, Calif. - In a tale of two halves, Santa Clara men's soccer and Cal played to a 3-all draw in a nonconference double overtime match on Saturday night at Stevens Stadium.
Santa Clara (7-1-3) jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first half on a pair of goals by Dominic Vegaalban and another by Oladayo Thomas, however, Cal (2-8-2) stormed back with three goals of their own in the second half.
Wyatt Myer, Shoei Honda and Nate Carrasco tallied a goal apiece for the Bears, the last one by Carrasco coming at the 85th minute mark to send the game to overtime.
The Broncos outshot the Bears 7-3 in the two overtime sessions, but neither team could push across a goal.
In the opening 45 minutes, the Broncos put on an offensive display with seven out of 10 shots on frame including three that got past the Bears goalkeeper Chris Gustini.
Vegaalban scored in the seventh and 14th minute on assists by Jack Murphy and Joshua Dabora.
At the 22nd minute mark, Oladayo Thomas knocked in a shot that a Cal defender failed to clear at the goal line to give the Broncos a 3-0 margin at intermission.
The Bears made a switch at goalkeeper to open the second half. Collin Travasos was immediately tested and made a save on Tyrone Kirunda's shot from close range in the 49th minute and played solidly for the remainder of the match.
With the Broncos seemingly in control of the game, Cal got on the board in the 73rd minute. Evan Davila sent in a cross that Wyatt Meyer headed in to make it a 3-1 game.
Just three minutes later, Honda closed the gap with a left foot shot to the far post to cut the deficit to just one goal with Carrasco's equalizer coming in the 85th minute.
The two teams combined for 42 shots in the game with the Broncos holding a slight 22-20 edge.
Travasos who played the final 65 minutes made five saves without conceding a goal while Bronco goalkeeper Andreu Cases Mundet was credited with three.
NOTES:
• Santa Clara is now 14-31-9 all-time against Cal.
• Oladayo Thomas who entered the match atop the conference lead in goals (six), assists (five) and points (16) tallied his seventh goal of the year.
