Men's Soccer Falls Short Against San Diego 2-1

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Cesar Bahena and Mason Tunbridge scored a goal apiece for San Diego as Santa Clara men's soccer could not overcome the two-goal deficit and fell 2-1 in a crucial West Coast Conference game on Saturday night at Stevens Stadium.  With the win, San Diego (9-4-3, 3-1-1 WCC) moved to a tie atop the WCC standings with 10 points along with Santa Clara (5-7-3, 3-1-1 WCC) but holds the tiebreaker advantage with tonight's results.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Santa Clara came out firing on offense with six shots in the opening 26 minutes of action with a couple of them sailing just over the crossbar.
  • San Diego scored on their first shot of the game in the 36th minute when Bahena banged it home from close range.  On the play, Bronco defender Aaron Sandhu tried to clear Rhys Gourdie's centering pass but the ball ricocheted off goalkeeper Jack Stoecker before Bahena found the back of the net.  It was Bahena's fourth goal of the season.
  • The Toreros led 1-0 at the half even though the Broncos held a 7-3 advantage in shots.
  • USD doubled their lead early in the second half.  In the 49th minutes, Tunbridge one-timed a shot with his left foot from 12 yards out beating Stoecker to the far post.  Samy Kanaan was credited with the assist maneuvering around the Bronco defense on the right side and threaded a ball to Tunbridge for his fifth goal of the year.
  • The Broncos got a late goal from Jack Civitts but it came with just seven seconds remaining in the game for his third goal for the freshman.  An assist was credited to Adem Hamdaoua
