STANFORD, Calif. – Layton Purchase and Fletcher Bank scored in the second half in No. 10-ranked Stanford's 2-0 win over Santa Clara men's soccer on Monday night in a nonconference game.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
- Santa Clara (4-6-2) and Stanford (6-1-3) were tied at the half, thanks to Bronco goalkeeper Eduardo Marin coming up with a big penalty kick save in the 25th minute. On the play, Marin dove to his left to make the save against Will Reilly to keep it a scoreless game.
- The Broncos were on their heels for much of the game and finally conceded a goal in the 51st minute to Purchase for the first goal of the game.
- The Cardinal doubled their lead five minutes later on Bank's goal.
- Santa Clara's best scoring opportunity came in the 64th minute when Pierce Dyal hit a hard shot that was saved on the ground by Cardinal goalkeeper Rowan Schnebly, who ended up with two saves.
- Marin and Felix Schaefer, who played the final 28 minutes, were credited with seven saves total (four for Marin and three for Schaefer).
- Stanford out shot Santa Clara 22-5 including 10-2 on frame.

HIGHLIGHTS:
POST-GAME COMMENTS:
Head Coach Cam Rast on the thought process of resting many of the starters:
"We played two days ago against the seventh-ranked team in the nation in Portland and to come back from that and play against a Stanford team that hasn't played since Oct. 1 is a tall order. So we looked at how we wanted to approach this game and decided to give some of our guys who haven't played as much, some opportunities. Alot of them got some quality minutes to keep them sharp and motivated and it will help push the rest of the team moving forward."
On how the players making their Bronco debuts played:
"Eddy (Marin) was particularly good in the first half. He saved a penalty kick, which isn't easy to do, and kept us in the match. Aidan was sort of playing out of position but he competed against top notch competition which will only help him grow his game."
On what the team will focus on until the next game on Oct. 21:
"We don't play until the 21st. We've played the bulk of the schedule and we've got five or weeks left in the season and five conference games left so from that side of it, it's important to give the guys time to regroup. Once we do, we will train the rest of the week, play an intra squad game and remain sharp. Some of our best games are the intra squads. Then next week, leading up to the LMU game, we'll get back into our regular routine and get them ready."
NEXT UP:
- Santa Clara returns to West Coast Conference action on Oct. 21 against LMU on the road.
