2-0 Season Start for the Broncos

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara men's basketball improved to 2-0 after beating Saint Francis, 82-59. Eleven different Broncos scored in the winning effort.  

 

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Showing out as the starting five for the Broncos were Adama-Alpha Bal, Christoph Tilly, Jalen Benjamin, and Carlos Marshall, Jr.

  • Marshall Jr. marked the board for Santa Clara with a jumper and continued with back-to-back layups, giving them a 7-3 lead early in the game.

  • The largest lead of the half was 20 points when Marshall Jr. drained a three to put Santa Clara up 42-22 with a minute left in the half. Shortly after, Tyeree Bryan extended it by two with a jump shot.

  • The Broncos held a 46-20 lead at the half, with Marshall Jr. scoring 20 of his 25 points in the opening 20 minutes. 

  • The Broncos went into cruise control in the second half, leading by as much as 36 with eight minutes to play. 
     


INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

  • Marshall Jr.'s 25 points was just one shy of his career high. 

  • Akametu, Knapper, Luke McEldon, and Bukky Oboye all made their 2023-24 debuts. 

  • O'Neil (16) and Caffaro (10) joined Marshall Jr. in scoring double digits.  

  • The Broncos out rebounded the Red Flash 51-24, with 18 on the offensive glass. Santa Clara also dished out 22 assists while SFU only had 10.

  • Santa Clara shot 52 percent (35/67). The first time the Broncos have shot better than 50 percent since Feb. 25, 2023 at San Diego.
