Women's Soccer Advances With 3-0 Win Over Arizona State

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – For the ninth season in a row, seventh-seeded Santa Clara women's soccer has won an NCAA Tournament match, taking down Arizona State 3-0 Saturday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Santa Clara (14-4-2) got the scoring going in the seventh minute. Colby Barnett took a pass from Lucy Mitchell and put a move on the Arizona State (10-7-4) defender before sending a perfect pass right to the head of Sally Menti.
  • The Broncos struck again in the 36th. Barnett once again sent a beautiful pass in the air that Alyssa Bourgeois ran onto and headed in.
  • It didn't take long to make it 3-0. Menti took a free kick from outside the left side of the penalty box and Annie Karich flicked it back with her head and in.

NOTABLE NUMBERS:
  • The Broncos are now just one of two teams, along with top-seeded Florida State, to have won at least one match in each of the last nine NCAA Tournaments.
  •  Santa Clara held the advantage in shots 13-8 and 5-3 in shots on target.
  • Marlee Nicolos made three saves on the day to post her eighth shutout of the year. It is the 11th as a team. The 11 clean sheets are the most by the team since 2015 when they had the same number.
  • The shutout was the fifth of her postseason career, moving her closer to second all-time at Santa Clara, which seven held by Crystal Gordon (1997-2000). With the three saves, Nicolos moves within one of Melisa Lowder's (2015-18) 38 for third-most in program history.
  • This was the Broncos' and head coach Jerry Smith's 65 NCAA Tournament win in program history. They are now 39-3-3 at Stevens Stadium in tournament play.
  • Santa Clara is now 5-0 all-time against the Sun Devils and 3-0 in the NCAA Tournament.
