Men's Hoops Heads To Stanford For Tuesday Night Showdown

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara men's basketball is set to head off for their first road contest of the young season and will make the short drive to the Farm to take on Stanford Tuesday evening at Maples Pavilion. 

The Broncos have started the season 2-0 with their most recent victory coming against Saint Francis. Santa Clara cruised to an 82-59 victory as the out-rebounded the Red Flash, 51-24, and shot 52 percent from the field. Carlos Marshall, Jr. was one point shy of his career high with 25 points on 10-of-12 shooting, including a 3-for-4 mark from beyond the arc. Johnny O'Neil added 12 points and Francisco Caffaro chipped in 10 more from off the bench. 

Marshall Jr. was named the WCC's Player of the Week after the first week of action. He averaged 23.5 points on 79.2 percent shooting in the two wins while averaging just 21 minutes of action. He currently leads the WCC in scoring and three-point percentage (66.7) and is second in shooting percentage. 

Santa Clara trails in the all-time series against the Cardinal, 51-27, but were the victors in the last meeting in 2021-22, winning 88-72 at the Leavey Center. The teams are 3-3 in the last six outings dating back 2004-05. The Broncos will be looking for their first road win in the series since Dec. 16, 2006 (62-46). It would also be their first road win against a Pac 12 opponent since Dec. 29, 2018 at Washington State. 

Stanford is also 2-0 with home victories over CSUN (88-79) and Sacramento State (91-73). The Cardinal are averaging 89.5 points per game with four players averaging better than 10 ppg. Maxime Raynaud has been the best of the bunch at 18.5 ppg while Brandon Angel is right behind him at 18.0 ppg. 

Raynaud and Bronco guard Adama-Alpha Bal are reuniting after playing as teammates for the French National Team. The duo helped guide France to the FIBA U20 European Championship title in Crete. Bal averaged 11.7 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.9 assists during the tournament run.
